The Hardest Part of Producing? Finding Your Sound.

In a world where new music drops every second, standing out isn’t just about making bangers, it’s about making something unmistakably yours.

Finding your sound is one of the biggest struggles every artist faces. It’s easy to fall into trends, mimic what’s working, and get lost in the noise. But the producers who last, the ones who truly matter: are the ones who carve out their own lane.

My Journey to Finding a Sound

I’ve always been a creative person. When I was a kid I loved playing with Lego and building things. That’s the same way I see making music today: taking little building blocks and turning them into something epic.

In the early days of producing, like most people, I leaned heavily on preset packs. They gave me access to cool sounds, which meant I could finish tracks and release them. But deep down, it never felt like I was carving out my own identity in the scene. I wasn’t really leaving a mark, I was just piecing together what was already out there.

The turning point came when I started diving into sound design. Once I understood how sounds were actually created and could build them myself, I was finally able to shape something unique. That’s when the comments started rolling in: “That sounds like a Needs No Sleep track.” People recognised my work before they even knew it was mine. That’s when I knew I was on the right path.

Today I can comfortably say you could tell one of my tracks from a mile away. Between my sound design choices and the way I structure my songs, there’s a signature style there that feels authentic to me.

I’ve also seen how powerful this is in other artists. A good friend of mine, Fab Massimo, blew me away the first time I heard his track The Floor is Lava. The sound design was so fresh, so creative, that I instantly wanted to know who he was. That connection led to a friendship and eventually collaborations, all because his sound was so uniquely his. That’s the power of having your own lane.

So how do you do it?

🔥 Stop chasing, start creating

Trends come and go. If you build your sound around what’s hot right now, you’ll always be one step behind. Instead, draw from unexpected influences, sample sources outside your genre, or build textures that feel exciting to you personally.

🎛️ Find the right limitations

Some of the most unique artists stick to a few signature synths, drum machines, or effects. Constraints push you to be more creative. Ask yourself: what’s one piece of gear or one technique that could become the backbone of your sound?

🎤 Embrace what makes you different

Your quirks might be your greatest strength. Maybe it’s raw, unpolished beats. Maybe it’s vocal chops that don’t follow the rules. Maybe it’s a weird way you build tension before a drop. What feels “off” to you might be the exact thing that helps listeners recognise your work.

The Real Challenge

The hardest part of producing isn’t learning EQs, compressors, or arranging. It’s having the confidence to commit to your sound and let the world catch up. That confidence is what separates producers who fade out with the trends from the ones who build a lasting career.

So, always consider: what makes your music unique, and how is it going to help you stand out?
